Zaims Luksus (christened James Henry Luksus) was born in Chicago in 1932 and is renowned for his highly colourful luxurious fashion fabrics. As a young man he initially studied architecture before travelling to Europe where he studied fine art at L’accademia di belli arti di Venezia and the Art Academy of Florence, Italy and fine art and Medieval Studies at Oxford University. He became fascinated by textiles, both printed and woven and learned hand-weaving on a trip to Greece. In 1961 he returned to America and set up his own textile weaving mill and printing studio in Vermont. In 1965 he received the first ever special Coty Award ever given to a fabric designer. He founded his own short-lived label, TZL, but left the fashion world around 1972.
